Children and adults will be moved by this story. The dark pages are filled with possibility and had me looking for life in the shadows. I recall my child reading the same book over and over, or having me read it, this looks like one of those books. I recommend it.
Children too rarely are allowed to see what the life of a wild animal is really like. Gamba tells such a tale with all of the elements, good and bad. The result is a story that makes adults and kids want to take action. A beautiful book with important lessons for little ones.
This is a fictional story that reads all too real. We meet Gamba, a baby silverback gorilla, living with his parents and their troop. They are used to humans coming to tour and photograph them, and are caught off-guard by hunters. Young Gamba is left orphaned, but he is rescued by veterinarians. The story is told through rhyme, with interesting mixed-media illustrations. I was particularly impressed by the glossary and study questions at the back of the book. It gave my 7-year-old a lot to think about, and we had an interesting conversation about humans and wildlife conservation after the story. I definitely recommend this series of books!
Yet another uplifting and informative offering from Wise Owl. You cannot help but be empathic toward the animals in their stories. In this case the main character is Gamba, a mountain gorilla. Children and adults both will connect with him and cheer for him. This story highlights the plight facing gorillas as humans encroach on them in numerous ways. This story raises awareness about our gorilla families with a charming rhyming text and wonderful illustrations that combine photography and artwork. There are learning activities and extra information following the story and also available on the Wise Owl website. I learned things I didn't know while reading this book to my neighbor's children.
