Mysteries of Beekeeping Explained M Moses Quinby Books
This book came out the same year as Langstroth's "The Hive and the Honey Bee." Quinby was the father of commercial beekeeping. He believed in sharing ideas rather than patenting them, as opposed to LL Langstroth. I have personally built Quinby's box hive for catching wild swarms and they work well and the bees winter well in them. The book is a good example of early beekeeping prior to movable frames. He debunks a lot beekeeping myths of his era and most of his observations are still relevant today. This is not a textbook for a beginning beekeeper but offers significant insights to anyone interested in the history of beekeeping. It is pragmatic, practical, and easy to read.

Mysteries of Beekeeping Explained M Moses Quinby Books Reviews
Awesome book at for the price.
This is the bible for bee keeping! Any grey areas in bee keeping are fully explained in this book. The history of bees, ways to accumulate the highest amount of honey and remedies for issues one may come across in bee keeping are illustrated in detail. I highly recommend this book to readers of all kinds, the book held my attention from cover to cover.
Very informative. Although it is a tried and true book, it gives great info that really doesn't change year after year.
Wonderful and educational read. This book is still very relevant for today's day and age.
the language is dated. it was an interesting read but harder to follow than I hoped. I was wanting to learn about bee keeping and this book helped me a little. this author wrote this in the mid 1800's. I would be willing to bet that bee keeping has changed somewhat since then. over all, it was ok. glad it didn't cost me anything tho.
Given that this book was written in 1853, much of what this author wrote about was his own observations. Many theories about bees were confirmed or rejected by his own observations. Moses Quinby was one of the first commercial beekeepers in the US. Much of what he wrote about still applies today and he maintained natural methods to treat bees which is important. Bees health is a huge problem and if you treat your bees chemically, you are part of the problem. Interestingly enough, Mr. Quinby was the inventor of the modern smoker with bellows. Not everyone that knows what they are talking about can write a book, and not everyone that can write a good book knows anything about what they are talking about. Great book. One that has a permanent home in my library.
We have been keeping bees for about 5 years now and thought we knew what we were doing. I was browsing the free kindle books and came across this and thought "why not." I quickly read the book and learned quite a bit. I did skim over the parts on building boxes as we use standard equipment. This book was written from a keen observer's point of view with lots of good science behind him. Very well written and a great source of information, even over 150 years after it was written.
